The Castello di Amorosa for those of you who don't speak Italian means Castle of Love. It was modeled after a Medieval Italian castle surrounded by a vineyard and housing a winery. The owner's grandfather who had been a vintner in Italy, came to the United States and worked hard to establish himself as a producer of quality Italian wine produced in the Napa Valley. He used authentic Italian methods and materials. This tradition was carried on by his son and now the grandson is the owner. He has begun using new technology only when it equals or exceeds the results achieved by the old methods and materials. They continue harvesting the grapes by hand and this is a very costly element of production, but they explained that this is how they can be sure that each grape is at its peak. They also only sell the wine from the castle as they do not distribute their wines. Dick and Viv sampled many types of wine and finally settled on what they wanted. They could haved purchased a barrel of wine if they had chosen and it would have been shipped to their house. If they purchase a case they could become members and have wine shipped to them at a reduced price on a regular basis. However, they declined these offers.
We toured the castle and were very impressed. I haven't been to Italy, but it looked very authentic and beautiful to me.
